Page updated

Wooden sailing ships lying at odd angles and in different states of damage, underwater or stranded on beaches. Their chests hold useful early resources, buried treasure maps, Coast armor trims, and nautilus armor.

This guide follows vanilla Java 26.3. Historical changes retain their own edition and version. Bedrock generation and loot can differ. Screenshots and verified seeds below retain their own game versions.

Game data and source research

Where it generates in Java 26.3

The ocean variant allows the nine ocean biomes; the beached variant allows Beach and Snowy Beach. Stony Shore is not in the beached-shipwreck starting tag. [2][5]

Candidate positions and rarity

Java 26.3 selects one potential starting chunk per 24×24-chunk region (384 blocks on each side). Candidate selection happens before successful structure generation; this is not a measured density or an average travel distance. [3][4]

The start lookup uses the ocean-floor heightmap for ordinary wrecks and the world-surface heightmap for beached wrecks. Later piece placement adjusts the selected template, so the initial lookup is not a promise that all ship blocks are at one level. [1][3][4][5]

What the starting position means

Both variants share a 24×24-chunk candidate grid. The generator can retry the other entry after a failed start, so equal structure-entry weights do not give every ocean or beach a 50% chance of each variant. [1][4][5]

Orientation and missing halves change the search

Shipwreck templates include upright, sideways and upside-down hulls, with complete, front-half and back-half variants. Some also have degraded versions. A fragment can simply lack the part of the ship that would have held a particular chest. [6]

The saved upright full hull is 9 × 9 × 28 blocks, while its upright back half is 9 × 9 × 16. These are template bounds before rotation, not intact-interior measurements. Wood palettes and terrain placement vary the appearance. [6]

Orientation and missing halves change the search
PartWhat to look for
Bow sectionSearch the surviving forward compartment; it may be separate from the stern rewards. [6]
Stern sectionCabins and lower spaces can be partly buried or turned on their side. [6]
Full hullMore of the ship survives, but blocks and access still depend on placement. [6]

Search the actual hull, not a three-chest promise

The piece handles three marker roles: supply chest, map chest and treasure chest. Which markers exist depends on the selected template; three roles do not guarantee three chests in every wreck. [7]

No living entities or mob-spawner blocks are stored in the audited shipwreck templates. Underwater enemies, drowning and getting turned around inside a tilted hull are environmental hazards rather than a fixed ship crew. [6]

Loot and rewards in Java 26.3

Supply, map and treasure chests use three distinct tables. Treasure-table chests roll metals and valuables; supply-table chests roll food, materials and randomly enchanted leather armor. A surviving ship section determines which containers exist, so these probabilities are not per whole wreck. [8][11]

All three tables include a separate Coast trim pool with empty weight 5 and template weight 1. A successful trim draw supplies two templates. All three also use the Java 26.3 nautilus-armor pool: empty 148, copper 20, iron 10, golden 5 and diamond 2. [8]

The map table attempts one buried-treasure explorer map. Its exploration_map modifier searches the on_treasure_maps destination tag, uses zoom 1 and skip_existing_chunks=false. A following filtered modifier discards the item if it lacks map_id, so the one-entry pool does not prove a usable map always survives. [8]

Compared directly with Java 1.20.1, the Java 26.3 tables differ. The inspected shipwreck supply table gains Copper nautilus armor, Diamond nautilus armor, Golden nautilus armor, Iron nautilus armor. The inspected shipwreck map table gains Buried treasure map, Copper nautilus armor, Diamond nautilus armor, Golden nautilus armor, Iron nautilus armor. The inspected shipwreck treasure table gains Copper nautilus armor, Diamond nautilus armor, Golden nautilus armor, Iron nautilus armor. Use the current weights rather than carrying older chest percentages forward. The older minecraft:map entry with an exploration_map modifier is replaced by a dedicated minecraft:buried_treasure_map entry; treasure maps already existed in Java 1.20.1. [8][10]

Loot and rewards in Java 26.3
ItemWhere the rule appliesWhat the data establishes
Coast armor trim smithing templateOne assigned shipwreck chest table16.7% chance; two templates. The same trim pool is present in supply and map tables. [8][9]
DiamondOne treasure-table shipwreck chest14.1% chance of at least one selection; one diamond per selection. [8][9]
EmeraldOne treasure-table shipwreck chest73.7% chance of at least one selection; 1-5 emeralds per selection. [8][9]
Buried treasure mapOne map-table explorer-map attemptOne entry is selected, but failed map creation is discarded; no unconditional usable-map percentage is asserted. [8]
Diamond nautilus armorOne assigned shipwreck chest table1.1% chance; weight 2/185 in a separate one-roll pool. [8][9]
