Ruined Portal

A broken Nether portal among scattered masonry, netherrack, and treasure. Players salvage obsidian and gold, collect lodestones, and repair the frames that can be fixed for Nether travel.

How it generates

Overworld portals can sit on the surface, under terrain, partly buried, or on the ocean floor. Underground ones start at Y=15 and mountain ones at Y=70. In the Nether they appear between Y=27 and Y=100, or between Y=32 and Y=100 when placed in an air pocket.

Ruined portals generate in the Nether as well as the Overworld. All seven Java IDs share one placement grid. Portals are built from ten normal and three giant templates, separate from the seven environment variants. Nothing spawns with them. Bedrock's placement values aren't confirmed.

Variants

  • Standard · Uses ordinary Overworld surface or underground placement.
  • Desert · Generates partly buried in desert terrain.
  • Jungle · Surface ruins acquire vines and jungle leaves.
  • Mountain · Can appear on the surface or inside mountains.
  • Ocean · Uses ocean-floor placement.
  • Swamp · Uses surface placement with mossy masonry.
  • Nether · Uses blackstone masonry and Nether placement.
