OVERWORLD · UNDERGROUND
Stronghold
Underground stone-brick labyrinths with libraries, corridors, and an End portal room. Players track them down with eyes of ender to reach the End, and loot books, gear, and Eye armor trim templates on the way.
From the Minecraft Wiki, summarised
How it generates
Usually buried underground, with no fixed Y range. Java can place them under oceans and fills in terrain to cover any exposed parts.

Java places strongholds in rings instead of on the usual spacing grid: count 128, distance 32, spread 3, salt 0. That's why no spacing or separation is shown. There are eight rings around the world origin; the first holds three strongholds about 1,280–2,816 blocks out. Bedrock has no 128-stronghold limit and places some strongholds near villages. Since Bedrock 1.20.70, every stronghold has a portal room. Bedrock's added version (0.9.0) is the Pocket Edition release.
