How it generates

Normal mineshafts generate underground; badlands mineshafts can appear higher up and break through the surface. Exposed corridors can receive supporting logs or suspension chains.

Java 26.3 gives each chunk a 0.4% chance of a mineshaft start (the legacy_type_3 roll), and the salt shown doesn't affect that roll. Normal and badlands mineshafts share one placement grid but use different biomes. A mineshaft can't start in the Deep Dark, though its tunnels can run into it. Bedrock's rates and a single height range for it aren't confirmed. Bedrock's added version (0.9.0) is the Pocket Edition release.
