Desert Well

A small sandstone shelter around a pool of water in the desert. Players stop for water and brush the suspicious sand under it for pottery sherds and other finds.

No screenshot yetPlaceholder: we have not captured a desert well in game.

From the Minecraft Wiki, summarised

How it generates

Generates on surface sand with solid ground under its 5×5 footprint. Two suspicious sand blocks sit under the water at different depths.

Biomes

  • Desert

It's a feature, not a structure, so it has no spacing grid and no structure ID; Java calls it minecraft:desert_well. In Java 26.3 a chunk has a 1 in 1000 chance of trying to place one. Bedrock's rate is listed as 1 in 500, but that isn't confirmed for current versions. Wells generate even with Generate Structures turned off, and nothing spawns with them. Pocket Edition 0.9.0 had wells that never generated because of a bug; 0.11.0 was the first version where they appeared. The update that added them has no name.

Notable loot

  • Arms Up Pottery Sherd
  • Brewer Pottery Sherd
  • Emerald
  • Suspicious Stew
  • Brick
  • Stick
