How to find lush caves
- Enter your seed and choose the edition and version that generated the area you want to search.
- Choose spawn or enter your X and Z coordinates, then select Find lush caves.
- Travel to a result's X and Z, then dig down to one of its listed heights.
Lush caves are underground, so a result's position does not show an entrance. On the surface, an azalea tree with rooted dirt below it often sits above a lush cave.
How the finder searches
Lush caves are a cave biome. Unlike a surface biome, they fill a range of heights below the ground, so a map at one height shows only part of them.
The finder reads the world's stored biome cells, each 4 × 4 × 4 blocks, in a grid of columns 8 blocks apart within 1,000 blocks of your start point. When it needs to look farther, it samples every 16 blocks out to 2,000 blocks and every 32 blocks out to 4,000 blocks. Each column is checked every 16 blocks from Y -48 to Y 96. Neighbouring lush columns form one area.
For each area, the finder lists the sampled column closest to you and every height in that column where the model places lush caves. Its area is an estimate from the sampled columns.
The biome does not say where the cave is open. Moss, glow berries and azaleas grow where caves open inside the biome; the finder does not predict open air, water or entrances.
Are the results checked in game?
In the 10 published Java 26.3 worlds where we checked lush caves in the game, the game found them in each recorded column, and the model places lush caves in each of those columns too. These columns were chosen from model predictions, so the check shows agreement where the model expects lush caves; it does not measure how many lush caves the model misses.
Bedrock results come from a separate model, which we have not compared with the game for lush caves.
Lush cave finder FAQ
What Y level are lush caves at?
It depends on the ground above: lush caves sit deeper under low ground and higher inside hills. Each result lists the heights where the model places lush caves in that column.
Which versions does the finder support?
Lush caves generate in new chunks from Java 1.18 and Bedrock 1.18.0. The finder supports Java 1.18.2–26.3 and Bedrock 1.18.0–26.50. Choose the version that generated the chunks you want to search.
Why might a lush cave be missing in my world?
Check your seed, edition and the version that generated the area. The finder cannot read your save or see which chunks you have explored. A lush biome cell can still be solid rock, and the sampled grid can miss small pockets between its columns.
