Ocean Monument

Page updated

Large prismarine buildings guarded by guardians and three elder guardians. Players raid them for sponges, gold, Tide armor trims, and decorative blocks, or build guardian farms there.

This guide follows vanilla Java 26.3. Historical changes retain their own edition and version. Bedrock generation and loot can differ. Screenshots and verified seeds below retain their own game versions.

Game data and source research

Where it generates in Java 26.3

Eligible starts are Deep Ocean, Deep Cold Ocean, Deep Lukewarm Ocean and Deep Frozen Ocean. Warm Ocean is not in this starting-biome tag. [2][5]

Candidate positions and rarity

Java 26.3 selects one potential starting chunk per 32×32-chunk region (512 blocks on each side). Candidate selection happens before successful structure generation; this is not a measured density or an average travel distance. [3][4]

At chunk-local X=9 and Z=9, the generator samples surrounding biomes at sea level with radius 29. Every sampled biome must belong to the required surrounding tag, which resolves to oceans and rivers. This broader test is separate from the deep-ocean start requirement. [1][3][4][5]

What the starting position means

Monument placement uses triangular candidate spread in 32×32-chunk regions. The generator creates a monument only after the surrounding-biome and start checks; the spacing is not the distance between monuments you will actually encounter. [1][4][5]

A maze inside a fixed outer landmark

A monument combines its large prismarine exterior with a connected arrangement of interior rooms. The room fitter can join adjacent cells horizontally or vertically, so an interior from another monument is not a complete route map for this one. [7]

A maze inside a fixed outer landmark
PartWhat to look for
Central coreThe treasure core encloses a 2 × 2 × 2 group of gold blocks. [7]
Wing roomsThe two side wings each receive an elder guardian. [7]
Upper roomThe penthouse receives the third elder guardian. [7]
Sponge roomsOptional sponge-bearing room pieces; their number is not fixed for every monument. [7]

Three elder placements and renewable guardians

The piece construction places three elder guardians, while the monument natural-spawn override lists ordinary guardians. These are different sources: killing the elders does not disable later eligible guardian spawns. [6][7]

An elder guardian periodically applies Mining Fatigue III to nearby players. Its code checks every 1,200 ticks and applies a 6,000-tick effect within 50 blocks when the effect helper accepts the player. Allow for slower mining while planning a route; clearing a passage through the walls is not the same as removing the effect source. [7]

Loot and rewards in Java 26.3

The monument reward path inspected here is elder-guardian entity loot. Tide trim and wet sponges are separate drops with different conditions. The temple does not assign a treasure-chest table to these rewards. [8][10]

The Tide trim pool has one draw with empty weight 4 and template weight 1. That pool has no killed_by_player condition and no Looting modifier. The wet-sponge pool does require killed_by_player and then supplies one wet sponge. [8]

Gold blocks in the central treasure and sponge blocks in a generated sponge room are placed blocks. Collecting those blocks follows block-breaking rules rather than the elder-guardian table or a per-chest roll; a particular layout must still be checked. [8][10]

ItemWhere the rule appliesWhat the data establishes
Tide armor trim smithing templateOne elder-guardian entity-loot invocation20.0% chance; one template. This pool is independent of the player-credit and Looting conditions on other pools. [8][9]
