Nether Fossil

Page updated

Bone-block skeletons scattered across soul sand valleys. Their bones provide bone meal, and in newer versions some come with a dried ghast for raising a happy ghast.

This guide follows vanilla Java 26.3. Historical changes retain their own edition and version. Bedrock generation and loot can differ. Screenshots and verified seeds below retain their own game versions.

Game data and source research

Where it generates in Java 26.3

Soul Sand Valley is the only biome in the Java 26.3 Nether fossil eligibility tag. [2][5]

Candidate positions and rarity

Java 26.3 selects one potential starting chunk per 2×2-chunk region (32 blocks on each side). Candidate selection happens before successful structure generation; this is not a measured density or an average travel distance. [3][4]

The generator chooses random X and Z within the candidate chunk and samples its configured height. It scans downward for air above soul sand or a block with a sturdy upper face, and rejects the start if the scan reaches sea level. [1][3][4][5]

What the starting position means

A 2×2-chunk candidate grid makes placement opportunities frequent, but the biome and supporting-surface tests still apply. It does not place one fossil in every such region. [1][4][5]

Small exposed bone formations

Nether fossils select among fourteen bone formations. They are compact remains rather than the buried Overworld skull-and-spine system, and have no chest or interior room. The saved shapes range from low, wide arrangements to narrow upright fragments. [6]

For scale, fossil_2 has bounds of 5 × 1 × 5, fossil_10 is 3 × 7 × 1, and fossil_14 is 7 × 7 × 6 before rotation. These dimensions describe individual templates, including empty positions, not a guaranteed visible silhouette. [6]

Check for a dried ghast separately

After placing the fossil, the code takes a 50% random branch and chooses one location at the bottom of the fossil bounds. It places a dried ghast only if that chosen block is air. The placement bounds are expanded to include the fossil before this check. The branch probability is therefore not an unconditional 50% chance of an intact dried ghast beside every visible fossil. [7]

The templates themselves have no living residents or mob spawners. The dried ghast is a separately placed block, and the surrounding Nether remains the source of ordinary hostile encounters. [6][7]

Loot and rewards in Java 26.3

The Nether fossil is a bone formation with no generated chest. Its collectible resources are placed blocks, which follow block-breaking rules rather than randomized chest contents. [8][9]

The current piece code takes a 50% random branch and samples one position at the bottom of the fossil bounds for a dried ghast. Placement additionally requires that position to be air and inside the processing bounds. The branch probability is not an unconditional 50% chance of a collectible dried ghast at every fossil. [8][9]

The bone-block and dried-ghast block loot tables each name their own item and require survives_explosion. That confirms item identity; normal harvesting also depends on the applicable breaking rules. No intact block count or seed-specific reward is inferred. [8]

Loot and rewards in Java 26.3
ItemWhere the rule appliesWhat the data establishes
Bone blockA surviving fossil bone blockA placed block to collect under normal block-breaking rules; not a chest selection. [8]
Dried ghastOnly if the separate placement succeedsA separately placed block; the 50% branch alone does not establish its final presence. [8]

Version history and release dates

These milestones retain their edition and exact build labels. Snapshot, beta and preview dates belong to those development builds; full releases and staggered Pocket platform releases are dated separately. Historical introduction claims come from the cited Wiki history. [10]
