End Gateway

Page updated

A small bedrock frame around a portal that links distant parts of the End. Gateways shorten the trip to the outer-island cities and give you a way back to the central island.

This guide follows vanilla Java 26.3. Historical changes retain their own edition and version. Bedrock generation and loot can differ. Screenshots and verified seeds below retain their own game versions.

Where it generates in Java 26.3

The outer-island return-gateway feature is included in End Highlands. Gateways created by the dragon-fight system or by first-use exit generation follow separate code paths and are not limited to that feature-placement rule. [1][3][4]

Placement and frequency

The natural End Highlands return-gateway feature has a one-in-700 rarity filter, then samples the motion-blocking heightmap and moves the gateway origin another 3–9 blocks upward. Its configured exact exit is (100, 50, 0). This rate applies only to that placed feature. [1][2][4]

Conditions and limits

The dragon-fight system initializes twenty possible central gateway sites, placed around radius 96 at Y=75. A recognized dragon defeat selects a remaining site. A gateway without a saved destination searches outward from a tentative position 1,024 blocks from the origin, adjusts for nearby terrain and can generate an island before creating its linked gateway. The initial 1,024-block vector is not a fixed final exit coordinate. [1][2][4]

A small portal inside a bedrock frame

The gateway feature writes a 3 × 5 × 3 region around a single central End-gateway block. Bedrock above and below forms the recognizable frame; the rest of the region includes cleared air. This is a compact transit structure, not a room with treasure. [5]

The narrow opening can be entered with an ender pearl or by fitting into the gap through movement such as crawling. The pinned Wiki also describes Elytra flight and swimming access. Prepare stable ground around the approach before aiming into the aperture. [6]

The destination is part of the gateway state

A gateway stores its exit position and whether teleportation uses that exact position. If an End gateway has no exit yet, the server searches for or creates a suitable destination and creates a linked gateway there. Its destination is therefore more than a decorative property of the bedrock frame. [5]

The code also manages a short teleport cooldown. The feature places no mob, chest or spawner: danger comes from the arrival terrain, the void and surrounding entities. Keep the return gateway visible when beginning an outer-island expedition. [5]

Resources rather than chest loot

The gateway placement routine writes the central End gateway block, its bedrock frame and surrounding air. It creates no chest, reward pool or resident entity. The gateway is a travel mechanism rather than a source of randomized container loot. [7][8]

The generated frame and active portal block should not be presented as ordinary survival item rewards. This page does not assign a chest-drop percentage to either block, or infer item drops from the existence of a gateway marker. [7][8]

Version history and release dates

These milestones retain their edition and exact build labels. Snapshot, beta and preview dates belong to those development builds; full releases and staggered Pocket platform releases are dated separately. Historical introduction claims come from the cited Wiki history. [9]
