Desert Well

Page updated

A small sandstone shelter around a pool of water in the desert. Players stop for water and brush the suspicious sand under it for pottery sherds and other finds.

This guide follows vanilla Java 26.3. Historical changes retain their own edition and version. Bedrock generation and loot can differ. Screenshots and verified seeds below retain their own game versions.

Game data and source research

Where it generates in Java 26.3

The desert-well placed feature is included in the Desert biome. In Java 26.3 its implementation is a data-driven overlay of templates, rather than a dedicated structure-set placement. [1][3][4]

Placement and frequency

The rarity filter passes approximately one in 1,000 attempts before choosing an X/Z position and sampling the motion-blocking heightmap. The origin then moves down one block and must be sand. [1][2][4]

Conditions and limits

The terrain predicate requires every block in a 5×5 footprint at each of the two layers below the origin to be outside the air tag. It does not require all those blocks to be sand, and passing the one-in-1,000 roll alone does not satisfy the predicate. The overlay places the well template and separate suspicious-sand templates. [1][2][4]

A small well with archaeology below

In Java 26.3 the well uses a saved 5 × 7 × 5 template and a separate one-block suspicious-sand template. The saved height includes its buried portion; the visible roof is not seven blocks above the surface. [5]

Its feature overlays the main well with two suspicious-sand placements, one at each of two depths beneath the origin. Each placement chooses among five positions in a cross. Look beneath and around the water instead of expecting a chest room or shaft leading to a dungeon. [5]

Roof and supportsThe small sandstone shelter marks the feature at the surface. [5]
Water basinThe central water is a landmark for the buried archaeology area. [5]
Suspicious sandSeparate placement steps assign the desert-well archaeology loot table. [5]

An archaeology stop, not a combat structure

The audited well templates contain no residents, spawner or loot chest. Its special interaction is with the buried suspicious sand. Search cautiously so ordinary excavation does not remove the blocks intended for brushing. [5]

The two configured placement steps describe construction. They are not a promise that both reward-bearing blocks remain intact after later terrain changes or another player has visited. [5]

Loot and rewards in Java 26.3

The inspected well reward path is archaeology rather than a treasure chest. One successfully brushed block assigned desert_well loot produces one table outcome. Ordinary sand and the well building are not additional draws. [6]

Arms Up and Brewer pottery sherds each weigh 2. Brick, emerald, stick and suspicious stew each weigh 1, so total weight is 8. The stew entry chooses from six listed effects; its effect roll is separate from selecting the stew itself. [6]

Version history and release dates

These milestones retain their edition and exact build labels. Snapshot, beta and preview dates belong to those development builds; full releases and staggered Pocket platform releases are dated separately. Historical introduction claims come from the cited Wiki history. [8]
