Buried Treasure

Page updated

A single hidden chest, usually under a beach or a coastal seabed. Every chest has a Heart of the Sea for crafting a conduit, along with valuable resources and gear.

This guide follows vanilla Java 26.3. Historical changes retain their own edition and version. Bedrock generation and loot can differ. Screenshots and verified seeds below retain their own game versions.

Game data and source research

Where it generates in Java 26.3

Beach and Snowy Beach are the two eligible Java 26.3 starting biomes. The final biome check uses the structure generation stub rather than a rule requiring every nearby block to be sand. [2][5]

Candidate positions and rarity

Java 26.3 tests each chunk as a potential start before its frequency filter. The configured frequency filter is 1%. Candidate selection happens before successful structure generation; this is not a measured density or an average travel distance. [3][4]

The structure set tests every chunk, then applies a 0.01 frequency filter. Passing that one-percent filter is an opportunity for generation, not proof that a chest was successfully placed. [1][3][4][5]

What the starting position means

The treasure piece is anchored at chunk-local X=9 and Z=9. Its constructor receives Y=90, but the placement routine searches for support; do not treat 90 as the chest height. [1][4][5]

One buried chest, without a building

Buried treasure is a single chest placement, not a hidden dungeon. The piece searches downward for a suitable supporting block, then fills nearby air or liquid gaps before creating its chest. There is no room entrance, staircase or enclosing temple to uncover. [6]

Search the ground at the target rather than looking for an architectural landmark. Terrain can leave the chest under sand, gravel or another surface layer; the placement code decides from local block conditions instead of a fixed depth beneath the beach. [6]

Excavate around water and loose blocks

The construction path creates no resident mob or mob spawner. The immediate hazards come from the surroundings: water entering the hole, unsupported loose blocks and nearby enemies. Opening a small inspection area is more useful than digging a large underground room in search of a nonexistent structure. [6]

A treasure map or predicted point is a locator, not an inventory of the saved world. If the chest has already been removed or surrounding terrain changed, no visible ruin remains to prove where it stood. [6]

Loot and rewards in Java 26.3

The Java 26.3 buried-treasure table has a dedicated one-entry Heart of the Sea pool. The guaranteed heart belongs to an actual chest assigned this table; an explorer map or finder candidate alone does not establish that a usable chest was found. [7]

Other pools select ingots and TNT, then emeralds, diamonds or prismarine crystals. A 0-1-roll equipment pool and a 0-2-roll water-breathing potion pool can contribute nothing. Two food selections each provide 2-4 cooked fish. [7]

A separate nautilus-armor pool weighs empty 148, copper 20, iron 10, golden 5 and diamond 2, total 185. The armor draw is independent of the guaranteed heart and is scoped to this pinned version. [7]

Compared directly with Java 1.20.1, the Java 26.3 tables differ. The inspected buried treasure table gains Copper nautilus armor, Diamond nautilus armor, Golden nautilus armor, Iron nautilus armor, Iron spear. Use the current weights rather than carrying older chest percentages forward. [7][9]

Loot and rewards in Java 26.3
ItemWhere the rule appliesWhat the data establishes
Heart of the seaOne buried-treasure-table chest100.0% chance; exactly one heart from its dedicated pool. [7][8]
DiamondOne buried-treasure-table chest53.1% chance of at least one selection; 1-2 diamonds per selection. [7][8]
PotionOne buried-treasure-table chest0-2 water-breathing potions; zero is a supported roll outcome. [7]
Diamond nautilus armorOne buried-treasure-table chest1.1% chance; weight 2 of total 185 in a separate one-roll pool. [7][8]

Version history and release dates
